I first tried rooibos tea about 13 years ago at a friend's house. I was curious about the taste, gave it a try, and found it quite interesting, though I didn't think too much of it at the time. Looking back, I'm pretty sure it was Tick-Tock rooibos, given the familiar red packaging. Fast forward to last year, and rooibos has become a regular part of my tea rotation.
Despite its similar amber-brown colour when brewed to other darker teas, rooibos offers a lighter, smoother drinking experience. It's completely caffeine-free, making it an ideal evening tea, though I find it versatile enough to enjoy at any time of the day.
One unique aspect of rooibos for me personally, is the subtle sense of "aqua" I get while drinking it. Perhaps this comes from its natural hydrating properties? It feels gentle and refreshing, which is something I don't typically associate with darker-coloured teas.
Tick-Tock's rooibos has a warm, earthy flavour with a mellow, well-rounded finish. There's a slight nuttiness in the background, and a subtle sweetness (you have to taste for it). It lacks the bitterness often found in black teas, it's more neutral and smooth, which makes it perfect for those looking for a low-maintenance, everyday brew. I always drink it plain, but I've read that it also pairs well with a splash of milk or a touch of honey for those who prefer a richer, creamier taste. Some even add lemon or mint for a refreshing twist.
Once I finish my current pack, I'll be looking at getting some loose leaf rooibos. I would recommend you to give it a try, you can get them at most supermarkets for £2-3.
