My Experience
I spotted Tesco's new high-protein ready meal range during groceries shopping and, seeing the High Protein Chilli Chicken with Choi Sum Chow Mein, thought I'd give it a try. Let's be honest, the appeal was definitely the high protein claim combined with a very reasonable price.
Nutritionally, it's pretty decent for a quick meal: 312 calories and a solid 22-23g of protein per pack (400g). I was pleasantly surprised! The flavour has a definite chilli kick, which is welcome. However, likely due to aiming for healthier stats, the salt content (1.1g per pack) means it tastes a little tame overall. Nothing a sprinkle of extra seasoning or a dash of soy sauce at home can't fix if you prefer a stronger flavour.
The meal includes a reasonable amount of chicken pieces, which tasted perfectly fine. The noodles were fairly thick, not udon level, but satisfyingly firm to the bite. It also counts as 2 of your 5 a day, which is a bonus.
My main gripe? The vegetables. As often with Tesco, while the peppers were fine, there were so many carrots! Tesco just loves to dump all of their carrots wherever they can. I really wish there had been more of the advertised Choi Sum and fewer carrots for a better balance and texture variation.
Overall, while it's still processed food, this feels like one of the better, healthier options out there when you need something fast. It's good value, filling, and delivers on the protein promise.
