YO! Korean style BBQ beef

Spotted the YO! ready meals on offer at Tesco and thought I'd give one a try.

Straight away, this was a pleasant surprise on the flavour front. It's a fusion of black bean and gochujang, and the flavour works surprisingly well. The mix of salty, savoury, and spicy notes is nicely balanced. The heat is definitely there, but it complements the sauce rather than overwhelming it. The beef itself was great; it was genuinely tender and melted in the mouth, with no horrible gristly bits. My only complaint is that I could have done with a few more pieces.

The rice, however, was a letdown (you know me). It was just plain long grain rice that felt like the bare minimum had been done, acting more as a distraction than a real part of the meal.

As soon as I tasted the sauce, I thought the salt content would be high. What I didn't expect was the high sugar level to go with it. Looking at the nutritional information though, I was pleasantly surprised, it has only 1g of salt! The only problematic part was the 18g of sugar, otherwise it was pretty well balanced nutritionally.

The sauce was tasty and the beef was perfectly tender, the experience is only hampered by the disappointing rice and high sugar levels. A decent protein meal, would recommends for a fusion cuisine.
