YO! Teriyaki Chicken

Next up is the lighter, sub-400 calorie Chicken Teriyaki from YO!.

Just like the beef meal, the meat quality is a real positive. The chicken was tender and decent, so it seems they know how to do protein. The variety of vegetables included was also a highlight, adding some much-needed texture and making for a better taste experience overall.

Unfortunately, that's where the praise for the flavour ends. The teriyaki sauce was too thin and liquidy. This watery consistency made the signature sweetness feel unbalanced and slightly off, even though the general sweet-and-savoury flavour was there. And once again, the meal is let down by the same plain, boring rice that was in the other dish.

The real shame here is that nutritionally, this meal is fantastic. At just under 400 calories, it's very low in fat and the 1.1g of salt is excellent. Even the 13g of sugar feels reasonable for a teriyaki sauce. To top it off, it still packs in a solid 27g of protein. On paper, it's a winner.

It's a pity when a meal with such a fantastic nutritional profile is let down by poor flavour. While the chicken and vegetables were good, the watery sauce and boring rice made for a disappointing experience. It's a classic case of "great on paper, poor in practice." I can't recommend this one.

A quick note on the packaging...

The film lid on these YO! meals is a real pain. It’s the type that refuses to peel off in one go, tearing into small, annoying pieces. It makes getting into the meal, especially mid way stirring, and prepping the tray for recycling, much more annoying than it needs to be.
