Here we go again:

Far Far West is the latest Early Access "indie hit" to completely choke the Steam charts, and quite frankly, it is just the same old shit at this point. I sat down to do a full run with a mate over the weekend, and the fatigue set in almost instantly. Strip away the flashy robot cowboys and the supposed wacky magic, and you are left staring at the exact same foundational gameplay loop you have already played a dozen times before. The entire project functions as a hyper-safe cash grab riding the coattails of far better games, completely devoid of genuine creative risk.

Copypasted combat and an afterthought arsenal:

Evil Raptor clearly downloaded the modern co-op blueprint and refused to deviate from it by a single inch. You drop in, shoot some reanimated skeletons, collect bounties, and extract. The movement mechanics are literally a copypaste job. The jumping, the dashing; it all feels entirely derivative of every single other roguelite shooter currently suffocating the market.

Yes, they give you an open map. Yes, you get a customisable horse you can ride around the open map. But the core gunplay is aggressively mid. The six-shooters and Winchester repeaters feel like complete afterthoughts. They lack any real mechanical punch or satisfying feedback because the game relies so heavily on flashy spell combos to cover up how hollow the actual shooting is.

Engineered for the content creator economy:

The developers certainly put work into their quirky theme. The art style is vibrant, and tossing massive fireballs alongside a robot sheriff looks fantastic in a 30-second TikTok clip. That is exactly what this software is. Far Far West feels completely engineered from the ground up for the content creator economy. The quirkiness is meticulously designed as streamer-bait to make Twitch personalities scream at their monitors and generate viral clips for social media algorithms.

When it comes to actual, meaningful gameplay, you can find 50 other titles on Steam doing the exact same thing right now. It is a hollow sandbox built for people who just want mindless background noise while they drink and yell over Discord.

The Verdict

The fact that this game has already sold well over 500,000 copies and sits at an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating is just a depressing symptom of the current indie and consumer market. The masses are desperate for cheap, frictionless fast-food gaming experiences, and they will blindly reward anything that clears that incredibly low bar. Far Far West is a mechanically stagnant clone masquerading as quirky indie innovation. It might be worth checking out when it eventually limps to its full 1.0 release next year, but right now, there is absolutely nothing new here. Save your money unless you are perfectly happy buying into the exact same tired formula yet again.
